Our Two Days in Singapore

We have had a fabulous two days in Singapore, the weather has been like Brisbane in Summer 32 Degrees and muggy, but not unbearable, and we have done lots of walking and sightseeing. Some things are cheap and some things very expensive in Singapore, food, taxis, trains and buses and cheap, but of course drinks are expensive. We bought a two day pass which entitled us to unlimited travel on a hop on hop off bus, a river cruise and a visit to Sentosa Island and also a circuit on the Singapore Flyer, which is a huge 165m high Ferris Wheel, the biggest in the world, 5 metres bigger than the London Eye, it was so good, it didn't even feel like it was moving and we could see for miles out over the harbour which had heaps, looked like a hundred big ships waiting to be loaded/unloaded. We found this unreal Swiss Restaurant called Marche, where you just walked around and chose whatever you wanted to eat (and they had everything!!) they swiped a card and then when you were finished you paid at the door. Everything was so fresh and nice. Today after we came back from Sentosa Island we visited the new ION shopping centre which is on Orchard Road, (Orchard Rd is over 6km long and full of shops and shopping centres), the new ION shopping centre looks fantastic and different from the outside, inside there are just hundreds of shops, make Carindale look like a country town shopping centre. We had a really nice lunch at a food court restaurant which was three stories UNDERGROUND, and then we went down one floor further which was just all shops, I have to admit while we were there shopping, with obviously no windows in sight I was thinking about how far underground we actually were and was quite glad when we went back up to ground level. The train system which is very cheap, only $2 from the airport to the city and its like 20/30 minutes drive is all underground too!! The first morning we were up and out looking for somewhere to have breakfast and were surprised to find everything was still shut. Today after we went shopping we visited the famous Raffles Hotel, it really is a magnificent building, really large and by looking through the windows (you weren't allowed in unless you were staying there) it looked like it had all the authentic furniture, many people were having High Tea which looked very impressive from outside the window (I hope they wiped my lipstick off the window!!!). But anyway we thought we should try the famous Singapore Sling, which we did, and it was very nice, we sat in the courtyard and enjoyed the experience. Although at $107 for three Slings and one beer, we probably won't do it again!!! The whole city was very quiet, not heaps of crowds like we were expecting, but come the afternoon/evening there were lots of people about. But it has been a great start to our holiday, we have been impressed with how clean the city is and we have felt very safe. I forgot I was going to upload my photos onto the blog at the airport tonight and have packed my camera in the case, so will put some photos up soon. Happy Easter to everyone back home.

  6. OK then I have just been travelling your journey and loving it. How wonderful to actually stay with friends of friends to enjoy the real hospitality of the country you are visiting. That is what makes it so much more special. Have loved this time with you but may be in trouble if I don't go to bed now and I mean now as it is 10.45pm and I will never get up tomorrow for work. xxxx
